Aromatherapy in Make-Up
With the popularity of Aromatherapy ever growing, it is inevitable that the use of essential oils in makeup would become a reality.
It is not a new concept, indeed there was a company that bought out “Aromatherapy Makeup” in the mid-1980’s. As a practicing Aromatherapist at the time, I was so excited and couldn’t wait to receive and sell “Aromatherapy makeup” in my salon.
What a disappointment to find that the lipsticks were all scented with fennel essential oil. Now sweet Fennel essential oil is a wonderful essential oil to use in treatments, but in lipsticks?
As a teacher and practitioner of Aromatherapy and Holistic Skin Care since 1982, I have used essential oils in all my treatments and products.
Finally, the cosmetics industry is slowly catching on with the notion that cosmetics don’t just have to “look good” but can “feel good” and also “do good” at the same time.
With this in mind, my concern is that a cosmetic formulator is going to come along, (which indeed has happened!) and decide that they are going to launch an Aromatherapy Makeup Line.
Using essential oils in makeup is a powerful tool and this works well for the growing trend in cosmetics which is to deliver not just a pretty cover up, but to also have a positive effect on the skin and emotions as well.
Imagine a makeup that can cover up a condition whilst healing it at the same time!
Be aware that although essential oils are a powerful aid in helping with certain skin conditions, they are not a cure-all for all diseases that some sellers of essential oils would have us believe!
Some essential oils are very gentle and others can be very irritating and could possibly cause serious damage if used incorrectly. In lieu of that, it is extremely important to know which essential oils can be used safely on the face, especially around the eyes and in what percentages!
What are the Benefits of adding Essential Oils to Makeup?
Ideally, one would want Aromatherapy Makeup to:
Look Good – To conceal any blemishes, wrinkles, and redness, evening out the skin tone without looking like one has any makeup on. “The No Makeup Look”, whilst leaving the skin feeling smooth and silky.
Feel Good – The aroma to have a positive effect on mood whether it be to relax or to feel energized.
Do Good – By adding the correct essential oils to makeup will do good, whether it be by using Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) for its anti-ageing properties, or Immortelle (Helichrysm italicum) for its healing effects on rosacea.
There are many benefits to using essential oils in makeup. In this article we will look at the how makeup can help Rosacea by adding essential oils to organic natural chemical free makeup:
Rosacea - is a chronic skin condition characterized by facial redness with small and superficial dilated blood vessels on the facial skin, and in some cases can be accompanied by papules, pustules and swelling with burning and stinging sensations with the and in some advanced cases, a red lobulated nose (rhinophyma), may develop.
It typically begins as redness on the central face across the cheeks, nose or forehead, but can also affect the neck, chest, ears and scalp. Treatment in the form of topical steroids can aggravate the condition.
It is commonly found in people between the ages of 30 and 50, is more common in Caucasians, and although rosacea affects both sexes it is more often found in women.
Look Good - While holistic skin care therapy can address the underlying physical aspects of rosacea, makeup can instantly help improve the look of one’s skin and boost one’s self-confidence about his/her appearance. Just because one has rosacea is no reason to walk around red-faced day in and day out. The right foundation can cover up redness without irritating sensitive skin. It is important to look for a makeup that is hypoallergenic and non-irritating whilst at the same time giving full coverage so it will effectively eliminate facial flushing.
Feel Good - Applying makeup that contains soothing essential oils such as Immortelle can help with cooling the face and, can leave the skin feeling smooth. Add to the makeup some “feel good” essential oils such as Mandarin, Clary sage, Neroli and/or Petitgrain.
Do Good – All essential oils are anti-bacterial and most are antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal. With the application of essential oils, the skin can be soothed and calmed, the recurrence of pustules and papules reduced. Add to this the cellular regenerative powers of essential oils such as German Chamomile, Immortelle, Myrrh and Frankincense. By applying essential oils intelligently via skin care and makeup and greatly help in the reduction of Rosacea outbreaks.
More about the use of essential oils used in makeup will be available in my new book coming out soon: Aromatherapeutic Makeup.
