SEAWEED in COSMETICS
by Jan Benham FFHT, IFPA
Born from the sea, seaweed has the power to transform the skin. In a short time, firmness improves, lines, wrinkles and pores become less apparent, skin looks virtually ageless. Even the driest complexions are renewed and rejuvenated.
Gently harvested from the unspoilt beaches of north-eastern Brazil, the Aroma Shoppe combines the healing, nutritive powers of different marine algae, each carefully selected for their curative powers.
Marine algae of which there are over 25,000 species, are a rich source of organic and inorganic components of interest to the cosmetic world, such as minerals, iodine-rich organic compounds, micro-elements, proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids, organic acids, vitamins and so on. The algae selected for the manufacture of the ingredients of the SEAWEED range are exceptionally rich in biopolymers of high cosmetic value, such as those derived from uronic acids, fucose polymers and sulphate-rich polygalactosydes. These derivatives are present in brown and red algae, and form protective films over the skin and hair, acting as moisturising agents and stimulating cell-functions.
The bottom line is that marine algae are full of easy to absorb proteins, vitamins, minerals and lipids that have the ability to repair and protect the skin and hair. The daily application of marine algae helps reduce wrinkles and rejuvenates the skin. It also firms by strengthening the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin.
THE SKIN
The structure of human skin is composed of two distinct layers. The external layer, known as the epidermis - or cutis - is made up of numerous fatty cells and possesses a surface composed of dead cells which are constantly falling off and being replaced by others from the layer below (called the stratum germinativum).
The inner layer of the skin - known as the 'dermis' - is composed of a network of collagen and elastic fibres, veins, nerves, and - at the base of the follicles -, capillaries and sudoriferous glands, all supported by a gel composed primarily of hyaluronic acid.
Skin is defined as a protective organ which covers the external surface of the body, forming a barrier against the action of physical, chemical and biological agents at the deepest tissue level. As the first line of defence, it suffers all sorts of everyday traumas and bears the marks of the environment in which we live, our habits and life-styles.
Marine algae interacts with the proteins of the epidermis and dermis forming a protective, moisturising layer, and activating biological responses of great importance in skin-care products. The vectoring substances combine the biological properties of marine algae synergistically with other ingredients such as essential oils and herbal extracts, and exert a profound and differentiated cosmetic influence on old, damaged and tired skin.
In hair care, the seaweed gel and extract increases hair’s moisture retention, body, strength and elasticity.
The Aroma Shoppe seaweed range includes seaweed gel and seaweed extract:
SEAWEED GEL
The Aroma Shoppe Seaweed Gel is a stabilised extract of the Rhodophyceae (red algae) and Phaeophyceae (brown algae) classes of marine algae, harvested on the unspoilt beaches of north-eastern Brazil.
The Seaweed Gel contains the active ingredients of:
Sargassum Fillipendula extract
Hypnea musciformis extract
Gelidiella acerosa extract
Sorbitol
PROPERTIES
Algae extracts as well as being moisturising to dry skin, also reduces oiliness and sebum over-production and strengthens against damage caused by free radicals. Algae are rich in rare minerals such as zinc, selenium and cobalt. They are also a valuable source of vitamins - especially vitamins A, C and E - as well as peptides and bio-active sugars, essential fatty acids and special polysaccharides. They are the product of a careful combination of extracts from brown and red algae capable of reacting with proteins and forming films that moisturise and soften the skin. The regular application of seaweed gel improves tone, reduces wrinkles, and protects and rejuvenates ageing skin.
As a result, marine algae have long played an important role in ancient eastern civilisations. The Chinese and Japanese used them as food and as a source of medicines for the treatment of gout, fevers, abscesses, ulcers and even some forms of cancer.
The Aroma Shoppe has recently discovered that a UV screening compound occurs naturally in red algae which might help protect the skin against photo ageing.
APPLICATIONS
Seaweed Gel is recommended for use in skin-care products such as:
Moisturising face-creams
All-over body lotions
Anti-ageing products
Post-depilation creams
After-shave gels and lotions
Massage oils
Shaving creams and foams
Moisturising soaps
Face gels
Styling gel
Sun preparations – both pre and post sun

The extract moisturises hair, regulating the distribution of sebum and leaving it cleaner longer.
APPLICATIONS
Seaweed extract is recommended for use in skin and hair-care products such as:
Much investigation has been performed using the seaweed gel and extract directly to treat various skin conditions including applications performed on clients in beauty salons specializing in the treatment of extraordinary skin conditions. Two such results are reported as follows:
Pure, undiluted seaweed extract was applied to the skin of the face of two selected patients, A and S, women of 46 years old, for 8 weeks, with 3 weekly sessions in a professional beauty salon. On the other days of the period patients used the same extract, under the same conditions, in the morning and at night as a home treatment.
Patient A has been using commercial cosmetics upon her skin since the age of 32.
Patient S has never used commercial cosmetics.
Both patients skin were examined by nine professional beauty therapists with the following results:
Patient A – Skin exhibited senile atrophy compatible with age, deep lines in mouth region, expression marks, wrinkles around eyes and lips. Skin was slightly atonic with voluminous eye pouches.
Patient S – Exhibited strong degenerative atrophy, incompatible with patient’s age. Her skin was reticulated, coarse, flaccid, lustreless, deeply etched in front and around the eyes and mouth.
Both patients were then submitted to professional holistic skin care treatment according to the following routine.
Salon treatment
After 8 weeks (24 sessions) of salon treatment with seaweed extract, patients were given an adequate sample of oil in water cream for daily use, containing seaweed extract plus vitamin E and Hydraulic acid.
The results were as follows:
Patient A – The skin showed improved circulation and firmness in the skin, the wrinkles around the eyes and lips were significantly reduced and the eye pouches? What pouches? She has had numerous comments from friends and acquaintances ranging from have you been on holiday to you are looking younger to have you had fillers?
Patient S – The skin was smoother and had a ‘glow’ that wasn’t present before. Firmer skin and the wrinkles were reduced. She has had alot of positive comments from family and friends and loves her new rejuvenated skin.
Here is a case study from one of my Canadian Aromatherapy students specializing in skin care. With ingredients such as seaweed extract, essential oils and organic oils. Using her own names and slightly altered recipes from the books “The Creamy Craft of Cosmetic Making” and the “Baby Boomers Beauty Bible”.

Jane’s TESTIMONIAL
In May of 2008, I was approached my Michèle. She asked me if I would be interested in using her organic essential oil products for her Aromatology thesis and reporting back to her on their effects, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Umm…of course, my answer was yes!! Yes please!
What started out as a fun exercise, where I got to try all of these brilliant, fragrant potions turned into so much more.
Very soon after starting with the products, it became routine (although, always very nice!!) to hear, “Wow – you look great!!” or, “You just don’t age!!” or “What are you wearing? You smell fantastic!” It’s done wonders for my skin, and my self-esteem and my soul!
